Centrifugation is a separation technique that applies centrifugal force generated by high-speed rotation to separate the components of a mixture according to their density, size or shape. It ranges from benchtop and floor-standing centrifuges to ultracentrifuges and analytical centrifuges, with or without refrigeration. Separation occurs because particles of greater density, greater mass or different shape migrate toward the outside of the rotor at different rates, forming a sediment (pellet) and leaving a supernatant, or distributing themselves in discrete bands when a density gradient is used.
