A pharmaceutical or laboratory refrigerator is a refrigeration unit specifically designed and built to store biological products, pharmaceuticals, reagents and samples within a temperature range of 2 °C to 8 °C in a uniform and documented way. The main difference compared with a domestic refrigerator is that it is optimized to maintain a stable and demonstrable temperature throughout its entire internal volume, even in the face of door openings and variable loads. That distinction has the direct regulatory consequence that stored products such as vaccines, blood products, diagnostic reagents, thermally sensitive medicines and clinical study samples lose their validity if they are exposed to unsuitable temperatures, and that exposure must be able to be ruled out with recorded evidence.
